FAQ: Admission Requirements

Prev Next

What are the college’s admission requirements?

Admission requirements vary from college to college and program to program, so you'll want to contact the colleges directly about your specific program choice.

Do I need a high school diploma (OSSD) to apply?

No. If you don't have a diploma (or CAEC or GED), but you will be 19 years or older by the program start date, you may be considered for admission as a returning learner or mature student.

What is an OSSD?

The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is awarded to students who have successfully completed their high school education.

For information on what it takes to earn your OSSD, contact your local high school.

What is a CAEC?

The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) has replaced the General Educational Development (GED) and is the testing program designed to measure the educational standing of individuals who have not completed high school, but who have gained knowledge, skills and experience out of the classroom.

After completing the CAEC, individuals will have earned a High School Equivalency Certificate, which is viewed as equal to an OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma) by colleges and employers.

For more information, visit the Adult learning: The Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) page on ontario.ca.

How do I apply as a mature student?

Mature students, also referred to as Returning Learners, apply in the same way as any other applicant. Based on the information provided in the application, the college will decide whether an applicant is to be considered a mature student. Mature student status may be granted to applicants who are over 19 years old and do not have a high school diploma, CAEC, or GED.

For more information about applying to a particular program as a mature student, contact the colleges directly.

How do I get advanced standing in a course?

Advanced standing may be awarded based on a variety of factors, including previous education, work experience, life experience, and more. Colleges will determine whether an applicant qualifies for advanced standing. For more information about qualifying for advanced standing in a particular program, contact the colleges directly.
